The loss of a tooth or the inability of our teeth to perform their natural functions can severely affect our eating patterns, self-confidence and appearance. Dental Implants enable you to recover the natural function of your teeth and your beautiful smile. Dental Implants are titanium fixtures that replace missing teeth. They are essentially a screw that is placed into the jawbone. Dental Implants take on the role of an anchor within the mouth, which is then used to fasten 'false teeth' into position. They are surgically inserted into the jawbone to support the replacement teeth. Dental Implants provide amazing stability for patients, aiding with biting pressure as well as reducing irritation and ulcers generally experienced by Denture wearers. In our practice we approach implants from two directions. In some cases we refer patients to our resident oral surgeon in Cairns Dr Brian Finn. In these situations Dr Finn performs the surgery involved in placing the implants, and after a suitable healing time we then place the restoration - either a crown to replace a single tooth, a bridge replacing missing teeth or a denture retained by implants. In other situations the surgery may be reasonably straightforward and in those cases Dr Broesder places the implants and restores the case to completion. Both Dr Finn and Dr Broesder have some specialized software from Nobelbiocare called NOBELGUIDE. This software allows data from a catscan.to be used in 3 dimensional planning of where an implant should be placed. The two implant systems we use in our practice are Neoss implants and Nobel biocare implants (replace select tapered groovies). Typically implants require some healing time before the final restoration is placed - this is very dependent on th equality of the bone available. The softer the bone the longer the healing time. A very rough guide from start to finish for a typical implant case would be six months from surgery to delivery of the final restoration.
